Two paramedics step into a ready ambulance, the radio on and an unpredictable day ahead. It also means taking part in the conversations shaping the future of the profession. That is why we supported <em>Together in Emergency: Communicate, Adapt, Evolve<\/em>, a symposium organized by the Coop\u00e9rative des param\u00e9dics de l\u2019Outaouais and the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Outaouais.<\/p><p>Following the event, Demers spoke with J\u00e9r\u00e9my Lachance, who delivered a presentation on sustainable motivation among paramedics. It comes from wanting to help, to be useful, and to show up when someone needs care. But the reality soon becomes more complex. Not every shift is filled with life-threatening emergencies. Paramedics also respond to mental health and social calls, lower-acuity situations, and patients whose needs may not be best addressed by transportation to an emergency department.<\/p><p>When the available response does not fully match what a patient needs, a paramedic\u2019s sense of impact can begin to fade. The purpose behind the work has not disappeared, but it can become harder to feel. That is often when disillusionment sets in.<\/p><p>Lachance believes career longevity should be viewed differently.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e1adfeb elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"2e1adfeb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhen new paramedics joined our organization, I wished them a happy career, not a long one. Community paramedicine offers one example by giving paramedics more opportunities to apply their clinical judgment, connect patients with appropriate resources and regain a stronger sense of impact.<\/li><li><b>Competence<\/b> is often reinforced through everyday experiences. Operational metrics matter, but they do not tell the whole story. Recognizing sound clinical judgment, a compassionate approach, or a well-managed call can sometimes have more impact than another performance measure.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Beyond competence, strong leadership remains essential.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fb3cbff elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"4fb3cbff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe organizations doing best right now are the ones that stay close to their people.\u201d\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">\u2014 J\u00e9r\u00e9my Lachance<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49bfdef2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49bfdef2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn smaller services, that connection may develop naturally. Larger organizations need to create it intentionally by keeping leaders connected to frontline teams and addressing concerns before they become larger issues.\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>Belonging<\/b> is also built inside the ambulance. Partner assignments, team stability, and conflict resolution can all influence organizational health.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a004bd8 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1a004bd8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17d33cbb e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"17d33cbb\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7befd8de e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"7befd8de\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b1b1359 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2b1b1359\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e87514f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e87514f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sometimes, improving the relationship between an employee and an organization begins with something simple: listening before offering a solution. \u201cThe first mistake we make is thinking we already know\u201d, said Lachance.<\/p><p>Before leaders can support or motivate their teams, they need to understand what people are actually experiencing.<\/p><p>These actions will not solve every challenge facing paramedic services, but they help build something essential: trust.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c807b58 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"4c807b58\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cParamedics do not need much to feel heard.
